Common questions

Data centres: your questions.

Short answers, with links to the research and detailed pages.

Do all data centres use water for cooling?
Cooling designs differ. Dry coolers and air-cooled chillers reject heat to outdoor air without routine evaporative cooling-water use at that equipment. A closed internal loop can also connect to equipment that uses water, including a cooling tower. Other building uses can consume water too.[16, 17, 39] See the documented cooling examples ↗
What about electricity and new connections?
A facility’s power requirements depend on its equipment and scale. Hydro One publishes a large-customer connection process covering assessment, design, estimates, construction and connection.[66] Read about regional electricity infrastructure ↗
What kinds of local work could a data centre create?
Construction, electrical and mechanical trades, critical-facilities maintenance, structured cabling, equipment installation, network operations and technical support are relevant areas of work. The number of jobs depends on the project; construction and ongoing operations are different phases.[8, 45] Explore local careers and training ↗
Are the listed properties approved data-centre sites?
No. The property notes describe published listings, industrial land and redevelopment possibilities. They do not establish data-centre approval, an electricity allocation or a carrier construction commitment. Owners of listed or unlisted properties can contact us about their site.
Is this only about large AI campuses?
No. We support smaller regional facilities as well as multi-megawatt projects. The site covers local colocation, industrial buildings, potential development land and AI and hyperscale investment.
Where do AI providers, carriers and Internet exchanges fit?
AI providers can commit to capacity while a facility is being developed, as the Point Tupper example shows.[136, 137] Carriers supply connectivity. Platforms such as Megaport and PacketFabric, and Internet exchanges such as TorIX and CANIX, could add services once a facility and suitable carrier connectivity are in place.
